Lottie

The Cutie Pie Bakery and Cakery has had a steady trickle of customers all afternoon, but it’s nearly two and Evie’s home ec class is expected to walk through that door any minute.

I’ve had Lily and Suze refresh the fall decorations by straightening the scarecrows, the maple leaf garland, and the pumpkins that have begun to roll away from their posts.

Lyla Nell giggles in the baby carrier strapped to my chest as I feed her tiny bites of a plain cake donut.

“Glam Glam will be here at any moment,” I sing to her softly as Suze glares at me from the registers.

“How you can look that child in the eye is beyond me.” She snarls.

Lily snickers next to her. “How you can look anyone in the eye today, Lot, is beyond me. I can’t believe someone posted that picture of Everett and you getting down and dirty for all to see. I’m shocked Evie has agreed to bring her friends here today. I’d sue my mother if she even thought about teaching one of my classes after a stunt like that.”

That stunt she’s talking about is the fact that someone at that coital club last night snapped a picture of me over Everett’s knee. The irony of the situation is that Everett was merely using his knee as a springboard to land me into his arms. It was just a coincidence his right arm was slightly raised and that he had a look of sheer determination on his face. That photo was given the hashtag naughty hot judge. And as if that wasn’t bad enough, someone posted a picture of Everett roughing up Gargoyle as well. They gave that one the hashtag bad boy versus hot judge.

“It’s been a nightmare,” I say to Lily and Suze. “I just pray my customers don’t see it.”

Lily smirks. “They’re getting an eye full of something.” She nods to the corner where a few nursing mamas congregate while doing their milky thing.

“That I don’t mind,” I say just as the chime goes off and in walks my mother, holding the door open for Carlotta who staggers in with a tower of boxes balanced poorly in her arms. And after her comes Lainey lugging a car seat with a tiny bundle swaddled inside.

“The baby!” I give a little hop, and even Lyla Nell is acutely aware of the tiny babe’s presence.

“Beebee!” she howls, and my mother, Lainey, and I all coo at her effort.

“There’s my little angel.” Mom scoops her out of my carrier. “Come to Glam Glam.”

“Lottie Lemon,” Lainey snips as she gently sets the car seat on a table near the window, and Suze, Lily, and I all migrate around her. “Please tell me you were not feeding Lyla Nell that donut in your hand.”

“What’s wrong with that?” I ask. “It’s a plain cake donut.” I take a bite as if to prove my point—not that I wouldn’t eat something deep-fried and dripping with a sugar glaze.

Lainey shoots me a dirty look. “You keep that up and you’re both going to turn into a donut one day.
